Civil engineering is undoubtedly the oldest of all professions in the entire world, it being evident since time immortal. Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt for the first time evidenced the early activities associated with survival of humans. People started building houses, developed the modes of communication and searched for ways to prepare their own food. This was the time from when the art of building or architecture came into the scenario. Thus, building jobs started from as old as 4000 BC. Civil engineering and architecture were considered to be two different words with same meanings. The term of civil engineering was first coined officially in the 18th century when for the first time light houses were constructed.
A building job includes many sub-disciplinary knowledge of a diverse range of subjects. It holds its domain from the historic era with the advent of construction of monuments for the first time. The major subjects that form a part and parcel of a building job include mathematics, geography, geology, mechanics, soil profile, topological behavior of land and hydraulics. Without sound technical knowledge in a construction field the candidate is highly unfit for applying in such kind of jobs. Ancient history evidenced that the off-beat art of construction or in other words building jobs were done by craftsman, artisans and stonemasons. In the year of 1818, the first technical institute for training individuals for building jobs was opened in London from when this trade discipline became popular worldwide.
